Joseph F. Mahon

Joseph F. Mahon, 72, of Weatherly, Pennsylvania, passed away at his home on Tuesday morning.

Born in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, on July 8th, 1936, he grew up in Beaver Meadows. He was the son of the late Joseph F. Sr. and Elizabeth (Coyle) Mahon.

Joe was a Korean War veteran having served in the Navy as a Seaman on the Aircraft Carrier USS Randolph.

Before retiring, Joe was a crane operator at Bethlehem Steel.

He was a member of the D.A.V., Beaver Meadows VFW, and he coached T-Ball and Little League in Weatherly.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a son Sean, and sisters Leona Witchie and Elizabeth Grazio.

Joe is survived by his wife of 42 years, Kemper (Laudenslager) Mahon; son Colin Mahon and his fiancee Stephanie Vinning of Cleveland, OH; daughters Michele Hughes of Allentown, PA and Cathy Tracey of South Carolina; brother Cornelius and his wife Jean of Beaver Meadows, PA; sister Aileen and her husband Anthony Romano of Stroudsburg, PA; and grandchildren Sean Hoffman, Erin Hughes, Abby Grace Mahon, and Morgan and Caroline Tracey. Many nieces and nephews, whom Joe loved dearly, also survive.

Keith Larson will conduct services on Friday, August 1st, 2008, at 11:00 AM, at the Philip J. Jeffries Funeral Home, 211 First Street, Weatherly, PA.

Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Weatherly.

Lynda A. Pierno

Lynda A. Pierno, 43, of Weatherly, Pennsylvania, passed away Friday morning in Banks Township as a result of an auto accident on the Weatherly Plains road.

Born in Yonkers, New York, on September 18th, 1964, she was the daughter of the late Walter L. and Camille A. (DeBouno) Figas.

She was affiliated with the Catholic faith.

Lynda was a manager for Integrity Marketing of Hazleton.

Lynda is survived by her husband Douglas P. Pierno; son Douglas P. Pierno at home; brother Tom Figas and his wife Amy of Weatherly, PA; and niece and nephew Alexa and Luke Figas. A niece, Amanda Jenigen, of Gainesville, Florida, also survives.

A memorial service will be on Monday at 7:00 PM at the Philip J. Jeffries Funeral Home, 211 First Street, Weatherly, PA. Rev. Donald J. Stump will officiate.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 6:00 PM until the time of the service.

Final disposition will be private at the convenience of the family.

Dr. Daniel Houston Moore

Dan Moore died peacefully and in the presence of many caring, loving people at Heritage Hill Senior Community in Weatherly, Pennsylvania, on Sunday, July 20th, 2008, at 6:50 PM.

Dan was born in Elk Creek, Virginia on April 7th, 1909. He was the youngest of 8 children born to Dan and Nannie-Sue Moore (nee Cox), all of whom have preceded him in death.

Numerous extraordinary accomplishments mark the life of this gentle, "ordinary" man, including world renown scientific research undertakings, exceptional educational degrees, and several significant awards. He was a loving father and husband.

Dan's later years were spent on the property he owned in Weatherly where he did what he loved most -- communing with nature by planting trees, growing gardens, sawing and chopping firewood, and doing all he could to support and develop his natural surroundings without disturbing the ecological balance of the environment.

He will be sorely missed.

Dan is survived by his wife Cathleen Turner Moore; his son and daughter-in-law Dan and Pat Moore of California; daughter Susan Roberts of Washington, DC; grandson and his wife Derek and Susie Moore of California; and two great-grandsons Joshua and Samuel Moore of California. In addition, Dan is survived by many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

A viewing is planned from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM, Thursday, July 24th, 2008, followed by a service in the chapel of the Sisters of Peace Pentecost, 484 Pumphouse Road, Weatherly, Pennsylvania.

Michael Setzer

Michael "Mike" Setzer, 80, of Weatherly, Pennsylvania, passed away at Weatherwood in Weatherly on Monday, July 14th, 2008.

Born in Nesquehoning, PA on June 24th, 1928, he was the son of the late Michael Orlando and Mabel Setzer.

He was a member of Salem United Church of Christ in Weatherly.

A World War II veteran, Mike served with the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater of Operations and the Occupation of Japan. He was a member of American Legion Post 360 in Weatherly.

Before retiring, he was a mobile equipment supervisor at Tobyhanna Arm Depot.

Mike was a member of Hazle Azalea Fellowship Lodge # 327 F & AM in Hazleton and Lehigh Consistory in Allentown.

He was a PIAA official serving many years as an umpire for area high school baseball and softball games. He coached Little League in Weatherly and was one of the league founders. Mike was a Biddy Basketball referee in Weatherly. He was also the WHS basketball scorekeeper and timeclock operator for many years.

A lover of the outdoors, Mike loved dogs, hunting, and fishing and he was a member of Silver Ridge Hunting Club and Paradise Fishing Club of Weatherly.

Mike is survived by his wife of 54 years, Rachel (Graziano) Setzer; daughter Sandra and her husband Gary Benedick of Jim Thorpe, PA; son Michael A. Setzer and his wife Joyce of Drums, PA; brother Herbert and his wife Effie of Kingsville, MD; and beloved grandson Corey. Nieces and nephews also survive.

Services will be at the Philip J. Jeffries Funeral Home, 211 First Street, Weatherly on Friday, July 18th, at 11:00 AM. Rev. Donald J. Stump will officiate

Interment will be in Union Cemetery in Weatherly.

Oliver E. Frye

Oliver E. Frye, 62, of Weatherly, Pennsylvania, passed away at St. Luke's Miners' Memorial Hospital in Coaldale on Tuesday, July 8th, 2008.

Born in New Ringgold on January 14th, 1946, he was the son of the late George and Beatrice (Harris) Frye.

He was affiliated with the Lutheran faith.

Oliver worked as a truck driver in Pennsylvania and Texas.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters Florence Gerhard and Betty Fulk.

Oliver is survived by sons Timothy Frye and his wife Sharon of Weatherly, Daryle Frye and his wife Wendy of Poteet, TX, and Aric Frye of San Antonio, TX; stepchildren Anita Simmons and Aaron Connelly, both of San Antonio, TX, and Christopher and Amanda Mehlig, both of Weatherly, PA; brothers George Frye of Sellersville, PA, Richard Frye and his wife Tina of Pennsburg, PA, and Gerald Frye and his wife Brenda of Dallas, TX; and sisters Anna and her husband Alburtis Witner II of Weatherly, PA, Georgine Palladino of Perkasie, PA, and Dolores Kletzing of Fort Meyers, FL. 15 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews also survive.

Rev. Donald J. Stump Sr. will conduct services at the Philip J. Jeffries Funeral Home, 211 First Street, Weatherly, on Saturday at 10:00 AM.

Interment will be in Sky-View Memorial Park in Tamaqua.

Teresa C. Meier

Teresa C. "Tecy" Meier, 87, of Weatherly, Pennsylvania, passed away at the Hazleton General Hospital on Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008.

Born in Beaver Meadows, Pennsylvania on June 10th, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Andrew V. and Mary (Bretsky) Marusak.

Teresa was a member of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Weatherly where she served as a Eucharistic Minister.

Prior to retiring, she was a nurse for the surgical practice of the late Dr. John Schade of Hazleton.

Tecy taught a generation of children to swim at the Crystal Pool in Weatherly and she was a certified Red Cross Life Saving instructor.

Teresa was a member of the original group of Gray Ladies that served both the Carbon County Home in Laurytown and Weatherwood in Weatherly.

She loved to bake and was a loyal Penn State fan.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers Carl and Francis Marusak and a sister Martha Gallagher.

Teresa is survived by her husband of 63 years, John R. Meier Sr.; sons John R. Meier Jr. and his wife Rosemary of Sugarloaf, PA, and Joseph A. Meier and his wife Sherry of Homestead, FL; brother Andrew Marusak of Gettysburg, PA; sisters Mary and her husband Richard Topper of Cincinnati, OH, and Ann and her husband Tom Baker of Joppa, MD; and grandchildren John F. Meier, Gretchen Pledger, Brian Meier, Jaime Diaz, and Shannon Owens. 7 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews also survive.

Services will be from the Philip J. Jeffries Funeral Home, 211 First Street, Weatherly, PA, on Saturday, July 5th, 2008, at 9:30 AM. Rev. .James Burdess will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Nicholas R.C. Church in Weatherly at 10:00 AM.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

A Christian Wake Service will be conducted during the visitation.

Marion E. Gerhard

Marion E. Gerhard, 90, of Weatherly, Pennsylvania, passed away at Mountain City Nursing and Rehabilitation on Monday morning.

Born in Laurytown on September 26th, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Olive (Simmons) O'Donnell.

She was a member of Zions Evangelical Lutheran Church in Weatherly.

Prior to retirement, Marion was secretary for the Weatherly Area schools for 30 years.

She was a member of the WHS Alumni Association. Marion loved country music and enjoyed trips fo Nashville, Tennessee and Branson, Missouri.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers Sam, John and Edward O'Donnell.

Marion is survived by her daughter Judy Mennuti of Yardley, PA and brothers James of Summit Hill, PA and Walter of Tamaqua, PA. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

Rev. Walter W. Breiner Jr., Marion's pastor, will conduct services on Thursday, June 5th, at 11:00 AM from the Philip J. Jeffries Funeral Home, 211 First Street, Weatherly.

Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Weatherly.

Todd W. Nagle

Todd W. Nagle, 48, of Weatherly, Pennsylvania and Green Acres, Florida, died at his Weatherly home on Friday, May 30th, 2008.

Born in Hazleton, Pennsylvania on July 23rd, 1959, he was the son of Wayne and Joan (Holman) Nagle with whom he resided.

Todd was a member of Salem United Church of Christ in Weatherly.

He graduated from Weatherly High in 1977 and from Luzerne County Community College. Todd worked as a real estate agent.

He was preceded in death by his brother Troy; paternal grandparents Thaddeus and Mary Nagle; and his maternal grandparents David and Eva Holman.

In addition to his parents Wayne and Joan, Todd is survived by his maternal step-grandmother Lois Holman, along with cousins, aunts, and uncles. He is also survived by his canine companion Rosie.
Rev. Donald J. Stump Sr. will conduct a private service at the convenience of the family.

Private interment will be in Union Cemetery in Weatherly.

Virginia Fairchild

Virginia Fairchild, 86, of RD # 2, Weatherly, Pennsylvania, passed away at the Hazleton General Hospital on Tuesday, May 27th, 2008.

Born in RD # 2, Weatherly, on November 17th, 1921, she was the daughter of the late William Hoffman Sr. and Ethel May (Benjamin) Hoffman.

Virginia was affiliated with the Lutheran faith.

She loved growing flowers and for 30 years she operated the Driftwood Greenhouse in RD # 2, Weatherly.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Roger V. Fairchild in 1979; son Roger Jr.; daughter Leona Gail; brothers Gordon, Russell, William, Harold, Wilford, Earl, Willard, and Roland; and sisters Leona Myers, Eva Hoffman, and Noreen Koberstein.

Virginia is survived by her daughters Marie, wife of Herman Haas, White Haven, PA; Rosemarie, wife of Gary King, Weatherly, PA; sons William of Hazleton, PA; David and his wife Joann; and Victor and his wife Jane, all of Weatherly, PA; brothers Milton and Allen, both of Weatherly, PA; and sister Geneva Funk of Morrisville, PA. 23 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews also survive.

Services will be held at the Philip J. Jeffries Funeral Home, 211 First Street, Weatherly, on Friday, May 30th, 2008, at 11:00 AM. Rev. Dawn Richie will officiate.

Robert P. Hill

Robert P. Hill, 61, of Drums, Pennsylvania, passed away at the Hazleton General Hospital on Friday, May 23rd, 2008.

Born in Hazleton on November 11th, 1946, he was the son of the late Robert P. Hill Sr. and Doris (Leininger) Hill, formerly of Beaver Meadows.

He was a member of the Lutheran faith.

Bob graduated from Hazleton High School in 1964 and served as a Staff Sergeant in the Air Force where he was stationed at Tuy Hoa AFB in Vietnam.

He retired from PPL after 35 years of service.

Bob loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter, fisherman, camper, and traveler. Salmon fishing in Palaski, New York and spending time in Wyoming and Montana were his favorite ways to relax. He made many lifelong friends in his travels.

Bob is survived by his wife of 35 years, Carol A. (Gregory) Hill, and his best buddy, Murphy, a yellow lab.

Also surviving are a brother Martin and sister Linda Hill, both of Beaver Meadows, PA; sister Marilyn Suravicz of Beth, NY; mother-in-law Ann Gregory; brothers-in-law William Gregory and his wife Diane and Bruce Gregory and his wife Becky; nephews Troy Gregory and his wife Joy, Brad and Blake Gregory, Austin and Evan Gregory; nieces Heather Parkins and her husband Josh and Anne Gregory and great-niece Lily Gregory. Uncles, aunts, and cousins also survive.

Services will be at the Philip J. Jeffries Funeral Home, 211 First Street, Weatherly, PA, on Tuesday, May 27th, 2008, at 10:00 AM. Rev. Dawn Richie will officiate.

Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Weatherly.
