Pauline E. Marusak

Pauline "Polly" E. Marusak, 90, of Weatherly, Pennsylvania, and who was a guest at Heritage Hill, died at the Hazleton General Hospital on Friday, December 28th, 2007.

Born in Weatherly on January 5th, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Samuel E. and Margaret (nee Watkins) Van Horn.

Pauline was the wife of Carl G. Marusak who died in 2000.

Polly was a member of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Weatherly. She was a member of the St. Nicholas "Mercy Choir" which sings at funeral Masses.

Along with her husband Carl, she was the proprietor of the former Crystal Inn in Weatherly. She also worked at Mack Printing in Easton, Tung-Sol in Weatherly, and she was the office manager at both Hazleton Weaving and Leichtman's Ice Cream in Hazleton.

In addition to her parents and husband Carl, Pauline was preceded in death by her daughter Peggy in 1962; brother Edward Van Horn; and sisters Margaret Bubeck and Josephine Brown.

She is survived by brothers William of Daytona, FL and Thomas of Warminster, PA; sisters Katie and her husband Ottavio Pirochi of Philadelphia, PA, Ruth and her husband Peter Yagalla of Weatherly, PA, Doris and her husband Hugh Koehler of Lancaster, PA, and Marlene and her husband Paul West of Weatherly, PA. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

Rev. Floyd Caesar will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church, 318 Plane Street, Weatherly, on Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008, at 11:00 AM.

Interment will be in St. Nicholas R.C. Church cemetery in Weatherly.

Friends may call at St. Nicholas R.C. Church on Wednesday from 10:00 AM until the time of the Mass.

Andrew L. Hertel

Andrew L. Hertel, 79, of Weatherly, Pennsylvania, died at his home on Friday, December 28th, 2007.

Born in Downingtown, Pennsylvania on January 15th, 1928, he was the son of the late Anton E. and Elizabeth (nee Williams) Hertel.

Andrew was a member of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Weatherly.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the United States Navy.

Andrew was an office manager for National Cash Register Company in Wilmington, Delaware.

Andrew is survived by his wife of 57 years, Elizabeth "Betty" (nee Scott) Hertel; son Andrew and his wife Daisy of Nesquehoning, PA; sister Mae Swarner of Downingtown; and two grandchildren.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Anna Novitsky

Anna Brazzo Novitsky, 84, of Weatherly, died Monday, December 24th, 2007, at Weatherwood in Weatherly, Pennsylvania.

Anna was the beloved wife of Daniel T. Novitsky and she and Daniel celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on September 2nd, 2007.

Born December 28th, 1922 in Beaver Meadows, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Anna (nee Zboyarsky) Brazzo. She was preceded in death by four brothers: Andrew, John (Jack), Michael ("DeDe"), and George Brazzo.

After graduating from Hazleton High School in 1940, she was employed at the Hazleton Standard Sentinel.

Anna was Junior Branch President of the Immaculate Conception BVM Sodality of Sts. Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church in Beaver Meadows, and she was a member of the Beaver Meadows Girls Club.

In addition to her husband Daniel, Anna is survived by four children: David and his wife Robin of Weatherly, PA; Anita (Learn) and her husband William McCartney of Jim Thorpe, PA; Arlene and her husband Russell Swantko of Columbia, MD; and Alice and her husband William Houk of Gaithersburg, MD.

Anna was grandmother to nine: Jennifer (Learn) Andes, Pamela (Learn) Schleicher, Vanessa (Learn) List, Amy and Jessica Swantko, Laura and Ryan Novitsky, and Brian and Stephanie Houk.

Her six great-grandchildren are: Rebecca Halcisak, Eli, Joshua and Jacob Suveg, and Emily and Madelyn List.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Weatherly on Saturday, December 29th, 2007, at 11:00 AM.

Andrew A. Baran

Andrew A. Baran, 83, formerly of RR # 1, Weatherly, Pennsylvania, died at St. Luke Manor in Hazleton on Monday, December 24th, 2007.

Born in Centown, Banks Township in Carbon County, on July 30th, 1924, he was the son of the late Andrew and Mary (nee Zeleznock) Baran.

He was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Byzantine Catholic Church in Beaver Meadows.

Prior to retirement, he worked at the Weatherly Foundry.

Andrew was a veteran of World War II having served as a Corporal in the 398th Army Air Corps Bomb Group in the Pacific.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Audrey (nee Davis) Baran in 1998; a son, Jeffrey; brothers Wassil, Michael, John, and Joseph; and sisters Mary Sentiwany and Annie Zulick.

Andrew is survived by his daughter Brenda Fedorick of West Hazleton; brother George of New Jersey; sisters Dorothy Goffreado of Bangor, PA and Helen Latack of Michigan; and granddaughters Laura Jacoby and Ashley Fedorick. Nieces and nephews also survive.

Services will be from the Philip J. Jeffries Funeral Home, 211 First Street, Weatherly, PA, on Thursday, December 27th, 2007, at 9:15 AM. Rev. James Demko will conduct the Feast Day Liturgy followed by the Office of Christian Burial in SS. Peter & Paul Byzantine Catholic Church on Thursday at 10:00 AM.

Interment will be in parish cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, December 26th, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Rev. Demko will conduct Panachida service at the funeral home 7:30 PM Wednesday evening.

Jeanette Carter

Jeanette Carter, 75, of White Haven, Pennsylvania, died at her home on Monday, December 17th, 2007.

Born in Mountain Grove in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, on July 24th, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Inez (nee Brobst) Mensinger.

She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Freeland.

Jeanette was the Steward at Kidder Township Volunteer Fire Company for over 20 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands William Walton in 1977 and Clarence Carter in 1992, and her brother Ronald Mensinger.

Jeanette is survived by her sisters Marian Detweiler of White Haven, PA, Barbara Perhonitch of Hazleton, PA; brothers Byron Mensinger of Bloomsburg, PA, Eugene Mensinger of Drifton, PA, and Geary Gueiss of Freeland, PA. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Rev. Mark Whitmer will conduct services on Friday, December 21st, 2007, at 11:00 AM at the Philip J. Jeffries Funeral Home, 211 First Street, Weatherly, Pennsylvania.

Interment will be in Freeland Cemetery, Freeland, Pennsylvania.

Anita M. Van Dyke

Anita M. Van Dyke, 79, of Hazleton, Pennsylvania, passed away at her home on Friday, December 14th, 2007.

Born in Hazleton on April 14th, 1928, she was the daughter of the late George and Evelyn (nee Good) Morgan.

Anita was a very active member of Faith United Church of Christ in Hazleton.

She was employed at the Hazleton AAA for many years.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband William D. Van Dyke Sr. in 1977, a son Paul M. in 1999, and a grandson Eric in 1994.

Anita is survived by a daughter Jean A. Van Dyke of Levittown, PA; son William D. Van Dyke of Wasilla, AK; brother Dennis Morgan of Palmerton, PA; sisters Amelia Morgan of Saddle Brook, NJ and Norma Bowen of Throop, PA; and grandchildren David and Amy. Several nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

Rev. Jane Hess, Anita's pastor, will conduct services at 11:30 AM on Wednesday, December 19th, 2007, at the Philip J. Jeffries Funeral Home, 211 First Street, Weatherly, PA.

Interment will be in Union Cemetery in Weatherly, Pennsylvania.

Mary L. Chincola

Mary L. Chincola, 59, of Weatherly, died at the Hazleton General Hospital in Hazleton, Pennsylvania on Saturday, December 15th, 2007.

Born in Hazleton on June 3rd, 1948, she was the daughter of Michael Breslin of Hazleton and the late Catherine (nee McCall) Breslin.

She was a member of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Weatherly.

Mary worked at Weatherwood as a nurse's aide.

Along with her father Michael Breslin of Hazleton, Mary is survived by her husband Adam Chincola of Weatherly; sons Michael Chincola of Weatherly, and Mark and his wife Cathy of Montclare, PA; brother James Breslin of Hazleton; sister Catherine and her husband Walt Marsyada of Drums, PA; and granddaughters Cora and Nadia Chincola.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Weatherly on Thursday, December 20th, 2007, at 12:30 PM. Rev. Floyd Caesar will officiate.

Interment will be in St. Nicholas R.C. Church parish cemetery in Weatherly.

There will be no visitation.

Karen L. Stritz

Karen L. Stritz, 34, of Weatherly, died Thursday, December 13th, 2007, at the Hazleton General Hospital in Hazleton, Pennsylvania.

Born in Hazleton on May 4th, 1973, she was the daughter of George W. and Evelyn (nee Feuhrer) Stritz of Weatherly.

Karen was a member of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Weatherly.

She was a graduate of the Carbon County Intermediate Unit and worked at the Carbon Training Center in Beaver Meadows.

Karen was preceded in death by her sister Barbara Stritz in 1974 and brother Steven Stritz who died on October 6th, 2007.

Surviving, in addition to her parents George and Evelyn Stritz of Weatherly, are a brother, George W. Stritz of Garner, NC and sisters Jennie (Mrs. Lester) Green of Bowmanstown, PA and Mary (Mrs. Brian) Lazar of Beaver Meadows, PA. Aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews also survive.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Weatherly on Wednesday, December 19th, 2007, at 11:00 AM. Rev. Floyd Caesar will officiate.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Elizabeth A. "Libby" Vogel

Elizabeth A. "Libby" Vogel, 93, of Quakake Drive, Weatherly, entered her Heavenly rest on December 12th, 2007, at Weatherwood in Weatherly, Pennsylvania.

Libby was born in Beaver Meadows, Pennsylvania on September 30th, 1914. She was the daughter of the late Elizabeth and Simon Hinkle.

Libby lived most of life in Weatherly. She was employed for 10 years at Tung Sol Electric and for many years she was the bookkeeper for Vogel's Bus Company in Weatherly.

She was a member of St. Matthews United Church of Christ in Packer Township where she was always active in church activities throughout her life.

Libby was an avid baker who was always ready to bake a special cake for everyone she knew, especially her family.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her first husband, John Young; a son, Robert J. Young; a brother, Donald Hinkle; and sisters Helen Gerber and Catherine Ritz.

Libby is survived by her husband, Kenneth Vogel of Weatherly; daughters Carol and her husband Jim Furmanchin of Weatherly and Nina and her husband Phil Roppa of Trucksville, PA; son John and his wife Joyce Young of Lancaster, PA; sisters Mabel Borneisen of Weatherly, Mrs. Albert (Ruth) Grube of Barnesville, PA, Dorothy Sachs of Baltimore, MD, and Betty Kunkel of Nesquehoning, PA; brother Robert Hinkle and his wife Marion of West Hazleton, PA; and sister-in-law Verna Vogel of Hazleton, PA. 15 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews also survive.

Rev. Donald J. Stump Sr. will conduct services on Saturday, December 15th, 2007, at 11:00 AM, at the Philip J. Jeffries Funeral Home, 211 First Street, Weatherly, PA.

Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Weatherly.

John P. Lesko

John P. Lesko, of Weatherly, Pennsylvania, died at the Hazleton General Hospital on Monday, December 10th, 2007.

Born in Hazleton, he was the son of Mary Ellen (nee Yuhas) Lesko of Weatherly and the late John P. Lesko Sr.

He was a member of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Weatherly.

John was employed at Weatherly Casting & Machine as a Quality Assurance Manager.

He enjoyed sports and was a former coach for the Weatherly Little League. John collected sports memorabilia and he supported his sons participation in hockey, football, baseball, and basketball.

Along with his mother, John is survived by his wife Linda (nee McGee) Lesko; sons Jared of West Chester, PA, and Zachary and Jeffrey at home; brother Barry Lesko of Weatherly; sister Bonnie and her husband Robert Rusden of Glendale, AZ; and father-in-law John McGee of Weatherly. Many nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

Rev. Floyd Caesar will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM on Friday, December 14th, at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Weatherly.
