Violet C. Skernolis

Violet C. Skernolis, a resident of Heritage Hill Senior Community in Weatherly, died at the Hazleton General Hospital in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, on October 30th, 2007.

Born in Hazleton on September 3rd, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Vincent "William" and Catherine (nee Shergalis) Kasper.

After the death of her mother and step-father Charles Shlomas, Violet owned and operated Shlomas Cafe in West Hazleton until poor health caused her retirement in 1964.

Violet married Walter Skernolis in 1966. Walter preceded her in death in 1984. She was also preceded in death by her brother Bill Casper and sister Helene Casper.

She was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Lithuanian R.C. Church in Hazleton for more than 91 years.

Violet is survived by her son Anthony Gosdeck and his wife Marilyn, of Naples, Florida.

Services are at the convenience of the family with private interment in Ss. Peter & Paul Lithuanian Cemetery.

Steven G. Stritz

Steven G. Stritz, 35, of Weatherly and Hazleton, Pennsylvania, died Saturday, October 6th, 2007, as a result of a motorcycle accident on Route 309 near Mountain Top.

Born in Hazleton on January 6th, 1972, he was the son of George W. and Evelyn (nee Feuhrer) Stritz of Weatherly.

Steven was a member of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Weatherly.

He was employed as a Sanitation Supervisor at Stroehman's in Hazleton and at Missions in Mountain Top. He also worked for Leskowitch Plumbing in Weston.

Steven was preceded in death by a sister Barbara Stritz in 1974.

Surviving, in addition to his parents George and Evelyn Stritz, are a brother, George W. Stritz Jr. of North Carolina; sisters Jennie (Mrs. Lester) Green of Bowmanstown, Mary (Mrs. Brian) Lazar of Beaver Meadows, and Karen Stritz of Weatherly. Aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews also survive.

A graveside service will be held at St. Nicholas R.C. Cemetery in Weatherly on Thursday, October 11th, 2007, at 10:00 AM. Rev. Floyd Caesar will officiate.

Michael A. Kurtz

Michael A. Kurtz, 83, of Weatherly, died Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007, at Heritage Hill Personal Care Home in Weatherly, Pennsylvania.

Born on January 7th, 1924, in New Boston, he was the son of the late Michael J. and Tecla Mary (nee Dulosky) Kurtz.

Michael was a 1942 graduate of St. Clair High School.

He was an Army veteran of World War II where he reached the rank of corporal.

Prior to retirement, he worked as a surveyor for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

Michael was a member of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Weatherly.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were his wife, the former Geraldine Boyle, to whom he was married for 50 years and who died on November 8th, 2005; sisters Rosemary Kirwan, Frances Kurtz, and Anna Roeder; and a brother Joseph.

Michael is survived by sons Michael Kurtz and his wife Mary Lou, Joseph Kurtz and his wife Kathleen, and Martin Kurtz and his wife Janice, all of Weatherly; daughters Mary Vack and her husband William of Weatherly, and Patricia Jones and her husband Joseph of Hazleton; a sister, Helen Reidel of Reading; grandchildren Maura Hodge, Courtney, Meghan, Jordan, and Cody Kurtz, and Mackenzie and Joseph Jones; and step-grandchildren David and Kevin Ritter. Nieces and nephews also survive.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, October 6th, 2007, at 10:00 AM from St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church, 318 Plane Street, Weatherly, PA, with the Rev. Floyd Caesar officiating.

Interment will be in St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Cemetery, Weatherly.

Jean D. Faust

Jean D. Faust, 84, of Weatherly, passed away at Weatherwood in Weatherly, Pennsylvania, on Monday morning, October 1st, 2007.

Born in Weatherly on June 4th, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Emerald and Leulla (nee Pfeiffer) Wilcrout.

She was a member of Salem United Church of Christ in Weatherly.

During World War II, Jean served as a corporal in the United States Marine Corps.

She was a library secretary for the Weatherly Area schools.

Along with her parents, Jean was preceded in death by brothers Harry and Rollin Wilcrout, and sister Marilyn Wilcrout.

Jean is survived by her husband of 64 years, John "Jay" Faust; daughters Joan (Mrs. Lee) Hess of Hometown, Jill (Mrs. Carl) Seigendall of Weatherly; grandchildren Brian Hess, Amy Scherer, Jane Sebelin and Bette Seigendall; and great-grandchildren Tessah Grube, Billy Angst, Cody Scherer, Mia, Braydon, Logan and Ana Hess, and Adam Sebelin.

Private services will be held at the Philip J. Jeffries Funeral Home, 211 First Street, Weatherly, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007, at 11:00 AM. Rev. Donald J. Stump Sr. will officiate.

Interment will be in Union Cemetery in Weatherly, Pennsylvania.

Friends may call on Wednesday from 10:00 AM until the time of the services.

Catherine Rose

Catherine Rose, 91, a guest at Weatherwood in Weatherly, passed away at the Hazleton General Hospital in Hazleton, Pennsylvania on Sunday, September 30th, 2007.

Born in New York, New York on February 6th, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Vasily and Magda Woyetz.

Catherine worked as a sales clerk in New York City department stores.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother John Woyetz, and a sister Eva Schulz.

Catherine is survived by her daughter Carole Fackler of Weatherly and grandsons Edward and Charles Fackler.

Graveside services will be held at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, New York, on Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007, at 1:00 PM. Rev. Debbie Bronkema, pastor of the Pleasantville, New York Presbyterian Church will officiate.

Marguerite G. Englehart

Marguerite G. Englehart, 86, of Weatherly, died at the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania on Sunday, September 30th, 2007.

Born in Weatherly, Pennsylvania on June 2nd, 1921, she was the daughter of the late George and Jenny (nee Markle) Younker.

She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Weatherly.

As a young woman, Marguerite worked at the former Allen Candy Company in Weatherly.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands Clinton Englehart in 1977 and Charles Englehart in 1985; brothers William and Harry Younker; and sister Anna Perry.

Surviving are sons Eugene of White Haven, Charles of Weatherly, David of Lansdale, Thomas of Cotopaxi, Colorado, Clinton of Westcliffe, Colorado, and Keith of East Greenville; daughter Janet Harlos of Mountain Top; brother George Younker of Ellenton, Florida; and sister Betty Weiand of Wilmington, Deleware. 16 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews also survive.

Services will be from the Philip J. Jeffries Funeral Home, 211 First Street, Weatherly, PA, on Thursday, October 4th, 2007, at 11:00 AM. Rev. Amy Boock will officiate.

Interment will be in Union Cemetery in Weatherly.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, October 3rd, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, and from 10:00 AM until the time of the services on Thursday.
